Zaphu Forum: Ubuntu Guide: Configure Netatalk to Share a USB Printer

  • Doug · 1 year ago
This mostly works for me, except that after sending a print file to my Ubuntu server the print dialogue box opens and waits for input. If I'm using screen sharing this isn't a problem I guess... But is there a way to use local printer drivers on my OS X machine and have the file print directly to the printer through the Linux server?

Any suggestions would be appreciated... I've been playing with the papd.conf file without any success so far!

To my knowledge, the OS X machine does try to configure a driver for the printer. However, I don't know if this is actually piped through and used by the Ubuntu machine. Also, I've noticed that some printers work better than others. For instance, my OS X laptop had no trouble detecting and configuring a driver for my HP LaserJet 2200 that I am sharing using Netatalk on my Ubuntu machine. I am afraid I can't be much help except to suggest that you try to configure another printer and see if it works better.

I followed this guide and my wife's MacBook Pro found my HP PSC 1500 printer just fine. However, when she goes to print something, we see it go through the queue on the Mac but it never gets to the printer. I ran the defaults write command for netatalk on the Mac since it's running OS X 10.5 but still no joy. Any ideas what could be wrong?

I would like to do anything you mentioning the other way around: Printing from a Ubuntu 9.04 on a printer which is conected to a USB port at my PowerMac with Leopard. How can that be done?

Ubuntu is quite hard to configure for people that actually don't know that much about computers and learning Linux right now isn't one of their priorities I guess. Just install a Windows version and you are done and it's much easier.
