Interest rates are supposed to reflect the costs of borrowing money: inflation rates, the opportunity cost, and the default risk. But anymore, they are simply what the bank can get away with. Chase holds the mortgage and home equity line on our house, which are significantly more than the $140 cash advance I took by mistake. For that matter, my credit card limit is $20,000. I could use the www.chase.com card to fly first class to Paris and go on a spree at Le Bon Marche yet pay no interest if I paid it off in full the first month it was due. But take $140 from an ATM and hold the balance for 20 days or so, and the total fees and interest work out to about $24, an annual interest rate of 208%.

Now maybe the separation of EiC / Publisher power is minor compared to the other fears that the Emerald has. Fears of a publisher with undue influence over the student workers if he or she serves as a professor in the J-School. www.chase.com Fear of a continued loss of control to the ODE board. And fear of going further into the red to fund his $80,000 salary. [Note: The Emerald currently has $50,000 in debt, but its revenue stream is neutral. This means that earnings equal costs and the ODE doesn't have to take on more debt, but they are unable to pay off their current debt. Sort of like you and your student workstudy job trying to pay off your credit card.]
